5 Apple Watch predictions / wishlist @ Apple "Wonderlust" (Sep 2023)
Sept. 12, 2023 | tech

Here are 5 predictions (really my own wishes) for the upcoming updated Apple Watch products at Apple's "Wonderlust" even on Tues, 12 Sep 2023.

  1. Apple Watch Ultra 2.0 - the Apple Watch Ultra was a surprise and a big upgrade for outdoor enthusiasts at the 2022 Apple event and I think Apple will ride that wave to create version 2.0 this September. Predicition rating - 10/10 this will happen.
  2. Dual-band GPS for both the series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra - most smartwatches, including the Ultra, already have dual-band GPS so this again seems like a thing that wouldn't be a huge surprise. Likely - 7/10.
  3. Upgrade Heart Rate sensor - monitoring health via sensors is bread and butter for the Apple Watch. Upgraded HR sensors would give more accurate HR readings and possibly energy efficiency advantages. Likely - 7/10.
  4. Better battery life - this would be a game changer for the Apple Watch. I can regularly get 14 days battery life from my Garmin Forerunner 945 LTE, which by Apple marketing is a "336 hour" battery life. As a point of comparison my Apple Watch series 8 only gets a smidge over a day (30-ish hours) before needing some more juice. Charging is very fast for both watches (~45 mins to full) but having to remember to charge before a run or sleeping is a pain and has caused slight inconvenice in my life (delayed runs, staying up slightly longer to charge the watch, etc). I think longer battery life is plausible given the annual SOC upgrade (this will be the S9) which should mean more horsepower and "hopefuly" more energy efficency. Unlikely - 5/10
  5. Glucose monitoring - every smartwatch manufacture has been looking into extending the array of sensors on their smartwatches beyond steps and heart rate. Apple glucose monitoring patents have been seen and according to internal reports, the Apple team working on non-invasive glucose monitoring recently hit milestones. Long shot - 3/10.
