FIELD_NOTES

Hi, I'm Michael and welcome to my part of the internet. My resume can be found here.

As the homepage says, I am a reformed wet-lab molecular biologist who now pivots between bioinformatics, software engineering and data analytics. I am a skilled full-stack engineer with specialisation in Python, Django, databases, analytics, and clouds (GCP/AWS).

Outside of work, I love to spend time outdoors either hiking, camping, or running up the steepest muddiest trails I can find. I have a half marathon PR of 1:22 (SF half marathon), I've also summited the highest point (17,769ft) of the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal (Thorong La Pass), and been to the top of Mt Fuji, Japan (12,388ft).

Check out a couple of my personal projects on my site, data viz of 15,000 bioinformatics papers, visualising places that I've visited across the world, or a project that uses AI to create a daily poem based on the top news story for that day.

I also wrote a long-form review on security in the new era of synthetic biology, exploring the biosecurity implications of rapid advances in synthetic biology and related fields.
